What are the stats on black powder use in general fireworks, are they dangerous?

what are the expolsive properties? is the powder slow burning? can only a fuse ignite it, can children take them apart and create bigger bombs?What are the stats on black powder use in general fireworks, are they dangerous?
I had a friend years ago and he was going to show his son how to make firecrackers. He came to work the next day with a Black Face and he a white man. Both him and his son were burnt fairly bad.
